Adolphus Clayton McHargue and Mary Frances “Fannie” Gill
There has been some confusion regarding how many times Adolphus Clayton McHargue has been married and also if Mary Magnolia “Nola” McHargue is the daughter of Adolphus and Mary Frances “Fannie” Gill McHargue. It is my belief, based on my personal research, that Adolphus McHargue was married only twice. He first married Mary Frances “Fannie” Gill who was the mother of his only child, Mary Magnolia “Nola” McHargue, and the second time to his sister-in-law, Minnie Summers Gill. Minnie Summers was first married to Mary Frances “Fannie” Gill’s brother, William Henry Gill.
I hope I can set this confusion to rest with the following information.
You can find Mary F(rances) Gill age 8 living in Georgia with her parents, Thomas Y. Gill and Mary Melissa Tomlin(son) Gill on the 1860 census record Sugar Valley, Gordon County, Georgia and two of her sisters.
You can find (Mary) Frances Gill age 19 living in Olin, Iredell Co., NC on the 1870 census record with her parents, Thos. and Mary Gill, her brother and her two sisters.
You can find Adolphus McHargue living in Olin, Iredell Co., NC on the 1880 census record with his wife, Mary (Frances/Fannie) age 28 and 2 year old daughter Mary M(agnolia/Nola). Directly above this family you will notice that Thomas Gill and his wife Mary M. are living with their children, Mary F(rances)age 28, Rebecca S. age 26, Julia age 25, William H. age 20 and Emma age 13. Frances is listed as a daughter in the house of her parents, Thomas and Mary and also in the next household as married to Adolphus and the mother of Mary M.
You can find Adolphus McHargue living in Statesville, Iredell Co. NC on the 1900 census record with his wife, (Mary Frances)Fannie age 44 and their daughter, (Mary Magnolia) “Nola”. On the 1900 census record the question is asked of the mother how many children she has had and Fannie responds with “1” and how many are living and she responds with “1”. You can also find Magnolia “Nola” McHargue Burgess on the 1900 census record Statesville, Iredell Co., NC living with her husband, John Clayton Burgess, Sara Frances “Birdie” (spelled Burtie on the census)Burgess, John Clayton Burgess, Jr. and Muriel Magnolia Burgess.
You can find Adolphus McHargue living in Statesville, Iredell Co., NC on the 1910 census record with his wife, Mary (Frances/Fannie) McHargue and two of their grandchildren by their daughter, Mary Magnolia “Nola” McHargue Burgess. Their two grandchildren living with them were (Sara) Frances Burgess age 15 and (John)Clayton Burgess Jr. age 13. On the 1910 census record it is asked of both Adolphus and Mary Frances (Fannie) how many times they had been married. They both responded “1”. It was also asked how many children the mother had and she responded “1” and how many are still living and again she responded “1”.
You can find Adolphus McHargue living in Statesville, Iredell Co., NC on the 1920 census record with his wife Mary F(rances/Fannie) McHargue age 67 with four of their grandchildren.
March 9, 1931 death certificate of Mary Frances McHargue it states that her husband was Adolphus McHargue and that her father was Thomas Y. Gill and her mother was Mary Tomlin.
January 24, 1905 Landmark newspaper prints the obituary of “Mrs. Mary Melissa Gill nee Tomlin” widow of the late Thos. Y. Gill and mother of Mrs. A.C. McHargue.
There is a Young memorial and family tree of Michael Cadet Young of Brunswick County, Virginia and of his descendants 16-- to 1895 done by Calvin D. Cowles in 1895. This tree can be found in the Library of Congress and has on one of it’s branches – (Mary) Frances Gill married to (Adolphus) McHargue with their daughter, (Mary) Magnolia (“Nola”) on their branch. Since Nola was born in 1878 and the tree was finished in 1895 the people were alive who provided the information to Calvin D. Cowles.
All of the above leads me to the conclusion that, indeed, Mary Frances “Fannie” Gill McHargue is the mother of Adolphus McHargue’s only child, Mary Magnolia “Nola” McHargue and also Adolphus Clayton McHargue was married twice and was the husband of both Mary Frances Gill and also Minnie Summers Gill.
Mary Magnolia “Nola” McHargue and John Clayton Burgess had the following children:
i. Sara Frances Burgess born July 26, 1892 Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina married Ralph Irving Bowman Sr.
ii. John Clayton Burgess, Jr. born September 1895 North Carolina married Claire Elizabeth Ardrey.
iii. Muriel Magnolia Burgess born March 18, 1899 Iredell County, North Carolina married Yates Edgerton.
iv. Emma Isabel Burgess born after 1899 North Carolina married Harvey Stonewall Bennett.
v. One baby born before 1900 in North Carolina (this is according to the 1900 census record as she says she is the mother of 4 children 3 of whom are living)
vi. Fred Cross Burgess born Dec. 17, 1904 North Carolina – never married
vii.William Glenn Burgess born September 25, 1906 Iredell County, North Carolina married Nettie Templeton.
viii. Wilma Clarice Burgess born November 11, 1908 Iredell County, North Carolina married Frank James Wasson
ix. Robert Doughton Burgess born October 22, 1910 North Carolina married Annie Lee Martin.

Relationship=3rd cousin 2 times removed of James Marvin Eaves (WW-II).
Mary Magnolia McHargue was born on 17 July 1877 in Iredell Co., NC. She was the daughter of Adolphus Clayton McHargue and Mary Frances Gill. Mary Magnolia McHargue married John Clayton Burgess circa 1890. Mary Magnolia McHargue died on 17 February 1957 in Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC, at age 79. She was buried after 17 February 1957 in Holt's Chapel, Greensboro Co., NC. Fred Burgess (son of Robert Doughton Burgess) attended the McHargue reunion (2008) and while talking with him about our relatives he told me that even though John Clayton Burgess, Sr.'s obituary (1934) claims that his wife (Nola McHargue) had already died that it was not true. Mary Magnolia (Nola) was still living in the early 1950's as she was living with Fred's father and mother, (Robert and Annie Burgess), Fred and his sister, Ruth. Fred and Ruth remember her very vividly. They remember she ran up grocery bills and would not pay them, she had slight dementia, received some kind of checks in the mail and that their dad, Robert Burgess, put her on a bus and 'sent her back to Greensboro'. (Fred's mother is still living (2008) and he confirmed this when he returned home from the McHargue reunion held in 2008 with her). That lead me to believe that Nola came from Greensboro prior to living with her son and his family if they sent her back to Greensboro. They never heard from her again. Fred also remembers hearing that she married a man by the name of Mr. (?) MAY before she came in the early 1950's to live with them. When I returned home from NC I immediately went to the computer and began searching for Nola May in Greensboro in the 1950’s. I found a death index and death cert. for a Magnolia May but that did not constitute enough “PROOF” to absolutely confirm my suspicions that this was her. While in Statesville I met Bradford McHargue (again from the McHargue reunion) . I sent him what verbal information I had regarding Nola from Fred Burgess and what I found while researching when I returned home. Brad lives in Greensboro and is an excellent researcher and was kind enough to search the newspaper archives in Greensboro and found the news articles regarding J. Frank May which led to the death cert. of our Mary Magnolia “Nola”.
