At the beginning of the American Revolution, he was commissioned Ensign in Capt. Elisha Rigg's Co., Elk Ridge Battalion, Anne Arundel Co.,
Maryland Militia, 30 Mar. 1776. On 2 Mar. 1778, he was promoted to First Lieut. in
Capt. Charles Hammond's Co. of the same battalion. (ARCHIVES OF MARYLAND, Vol. XI, p. 299: Vol. XVI, p. 525). He and his family lived in St. Thomas Parish, Baltimore County until about 1768 when they moved to his bro. Henry's plantation, a part of "Freeborn's Progress" in Elk Ridge Hundred, Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel County w here he lived the remainder of his life. His will (Anne Arundel Co.,Maryland, folio 44, JG it 1, no. 36) was dated 13 July 1788.
