He was drafted and served as a private during World War 1. This unit was believed to be a construction unit. During this time, one of the medical exams damaged his back. A needle broke off in his back, which caused him discomfort the rest of his life. After the death of his 2nd wife, Grand Pa would just show up to visit, stay a day or a week, and just as quietly disappear. He joked(?) that he was looking for wife number 3 when he passed away.

Robert Lee Brasington was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as a private in the 61st. Pioneer Infantry during World War 1. This unit was believed to be a construction unit. Robert Lee Brasington married Lilly Whetstone Halman circa 1953. Robert Lee Brasington died on 3 April 1956 in Orangeburg, Orangeburg Co., SC, at age 66. He was buried after 3 April 1956 in Double Branch Baptist Church, Orangeburg, Orangeburg Co., SC, He is buried in the Smoak & Hughes family plot in the church cemetery of Double Branch Baptist Church on the Neeses Highway ( Hwy. # 4 ) between Neeses and Orangeburg, S.C.
