Andrew J. Drebitko III was born circa 1985 in Schuylkill Co., PA. He was the son of Andrew J. Drebitko Jr.. He graduated from the Minersville Area High School in 2003. Andrew J. Drebitko III died on 1 May 2006 in Union Co., PA.
Obituary:
Andrew J. Drebitko III, 21, and Richard C. Helman Jr., 20, died in a one-vehicle accident at 12:30 a.m. Monday in Union County.
Graduates of the Minersville Area High School Class of 2003, they played football and basketball during high school and were both attending Penn State University.
Minersville Area football coach Patrick Mason said the men were best friends and were known for being humorous.
“They were always upbeat kids, with good senses of humor. They knew how to make you laugh in tough situations,” Mason said.
Mason said he was unclear on whether Helman played sports at Penn State, but knew that Drebitko was as a punter for football teams at West Virginia and Temple universities before transferring to Penn State.
He said Drebitko had been an All-State and All-County selection athlete and often volunteered to work with the high school football team.
According to state police at Milton, the men were traveling on Route 192, returning from Penn State’s University Park campus, when the accident occurred. Trooper Anthony E. Bickhart, Troop F, Milton, said Drebitko, who was driving a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse in which Helman was the passenger, was driving east at an apparent high rate of speed when the car went out of control while in a downhill right-hand curve.
The vehicle, Bickhart said, slid sideways in a clockwise direction, struck a small rock and went off the road, where the rear portion of the car became airborne. The car then landed in a ditch and culvert along the north edge of the road and continued to slide northeast until it struck several small pine trees and became airborne, Bickhart said. At that point, the car struck three large trees and came to a stop on its passenger’s side facing west along the north shoulder of Route 192.
Bickhart said Drebitko was ejected from the vehicle as it was either sliding or airborne and that Helman remained inside.
Neither man was wearing a seat belt and both were pronounced dead at the scene by a Union County deputy coroner, Bickhart said.
The accident “really hit home,” Mason said, because many students were familiar with both men. While leaving school Monday, seventh-grader Joseph Bickelman said he lifts weights after school with Drebitko’s younger brother, Jon, a sophomore, and said he was familiar with Andrew. He said despite the fact that Drebitko and Helman were older than current high school students, many kids knew them.
“A lot of kids went home from school early today because they were upset,” Bickelman said.
Superintendent M. Joseph Brady said students were invited to the school library during the morning for counseling. An intervention specialist and two guidance counselors were available to help students Monday and counseling is expected to continue today, he said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they try to cope with their tragic losses,” Brady said.
At Penn State’s Schuylkill campus, where both men were affiliated, word of the students’ deaths traveled slowly, according to David E. Holden, director of continuing education and marketing. Many students are not on campus because they are preparing for finals, he added.
Drebitko was a criminal justice major attending classes on the Schuylkill campus and Helman, who started his undergraduate education on the Schuylkill campus, had been majoring in forest science at University Park.
Penn State administrators are scheduled to meet at 8:30 a.m. today to schedule a memorial for the students, Holden said.
