Autobiography of the Eaves-Baxter Families
Hon. George Eaves, of Chattanooga, Tenn., Traces History of Two of Rutherford County's Most
Prominent Families.
(The Forest City Courier, 2 April 1931)
"(The following sketch on the Eaves- Baxter families was written by Hon. George Eaves, of Chattanooga, Tenn., with notes by Clarence Griffin. Mr. Eaves, who is now 86 years of age, is a native of Rutherford county. He was in the North Carolina state senate in 1898; solicitor in 1899 and United States Commissioner for 14 years; three times mayor of Marion, N. C., Editor of the News and Democrat, of Marion, N. C. for eight years, and is now practicing law with his son in Chattanooga, Tenn. The following sketch was written in May, 1928.)
"I do not for a moment imagine that any part of what I have to relate can be of interest to the public as a narrative, or as being connected with myself. The consideration prompting me to leave behind me the memories of my life, are, first, to transmit to my children what I know and have heard of our forefathers and their descendants, and second, the pleasure the retrospect will give me.
"Is it not remarkable that people are not more curious to know about their lineages. We do not know whether we are descended from royalty or evoluted from some inferior species. The masses do not know, with rare exceptions who their great grandfathers were. No record or heirloom handed down, notwithstanding the hereditary principle means a great deal. A casual observer can trace the father, and the son, and the grandson, and the family stamp is quite distinctly legible upon each of them, and strange to say, emphasis is laid upon the blood of horses, dogs, cattle, cats, etc., and they are pedigreed.
"Traditions tell me that my grandfather, Andrew Eaves, and two brothers, Spencer and Lawson came from England and landed at Charleston, South Carolina. My grandfather wended his way up into North Carolina and settled in Rutherford county. Lawson went into Virginia and Spencer came west. We hear of families of Eaves in these regions, and they, no doubt are descendants of these brothers.
"I remember when I was about ten or eleven years old, Pink Eaves, a relation from Georgia visited our, and Uncle Guilford's families and remained for some time sporting with my dear brothers and their cousins. He brought a negro boy along to wait upon him, was fine looking, finely dressed and in parlance of the time a typical aristocrat. About thirty years ago I read an article in the Literary Digest, signed G. G. Eaves, my initials, and this, of course, excited my curiosity and I wrote to him. We corresponded. A nc nan of the name, he said had been baried with honors near the tomb of Shakespeare. He was then trying to trace the line of descent of the family and from the information he had acquired thought all the Eaves in this country was related. He put me in touch with a Judge Eaves in Kentucky (I can't recall the given name) with whom I also corresponded. Some time later I received a letter from a law firm in Raleigh, stating a large fund in England was waiting the ascertainment of the heirs-at-law in this country to an estate in England. I put the matter in the hands of Lawson, my oldest brother, who died soon after and it was never attended to.

"I remember my grandfather and grandmother Eaves, and dear old souls they were. They lived five miles beyond Rutherfordton on the public road leading to Spartanburg. The house sat on a slight elevation some two hundred yards above the road. An oak grove interwined. The soil, white pebbles and sand and below the road were fields of corn and wheat in plain view of the porches. In the back yard a confusion of old time flowers of every hue, the air laden with their fragrance.
"There was a large garden laid out in squares and along the walks more flowers, surrounded by a dense orchard of apple, peach, cherry and plum trees. Passing through the wide, open hallway to the right, a row of negro houses daubed with red mud and from the center came the almost incessant chuck of the loom and buzz of the spinning wheel.
"The dear old place where many of my childhood hours were spent. Tom, my youngest brother, and I were always eager to go to grandfather's. We were made so much of and allowed more liberties in frolic with the little negroes. Grandmother died at the age of ninety-three and grandfather passed away within the year at ninety-six. They were buried within a quarter of a mile, and in view of the house, and a brick wall enclosed their graves. I don't suppose there is a remanant of it there now. They had three children, Guilford, Spencer, my father, and Betsy.
"My maternal grandfather, William Baxter, came from Ireland. He must have been a man of energy, pep and business tact, for he accumulated quite an estate, and owned many negroes. I remember hearing mother say he kept his whip over the front door to chastise them when disobedient. He was a little fellow and she said when he came in from work would almost invariably he down, and scarcely sit in a chair. From what I heard her say about him I have often thought Lynn a facsimile. Grandfather married twice and by his first wife had several children. One of them was Joseph, the grandfather of Jim Morris and Congressman Romulus Linney now deceased. Linney was a brilliant orator and noted for his forensic and political speeches, and a son of his, I believe is now one of the circuit judges in North Carolina. Uncle Joe was a prosperous farmer. I remember him well, he and my father were chums, he was a larger man, of a jovial, cheerful and kind nature, and I as a child was always glad to see him come when he visited us.
"The second time grandfather married Jennie Lee, my grandmother. My impression is she was of a very prominent family. I know but little or nothing about that branch. Major Herbert Lee a cousin of my mother was familiar at home. A tall, fine looking man, and wore long whiskers. He married late in life, a Miss Wray, a delicate little lady and I believe she is still alive and living in Knoxville. He had a son, Baxter Lee, who is now practicing law there and was an assistant U. S. District Attorney under Wilson's administration. While living at Round Hill I very unexpectedly met Richard Lee another one of my mother's cousins. As soon as he entered my office door I knew him, although I had never seen him before. He looked so much like my mother, a strange sensation swept over me. I took him home and he remained with us a week or longer. He was quite old, a Methodist minister, had prayer in my family, was very intelligent and a very entertaining conversationalist. Said he was then getting data to write a history of the Baxter family. He died soon after and never completed his work.
"My grandfather had seven children, four boys, John, George, Flisha and Taylor and three girls, Jennie my mother, Ester and Betsy.
"In these days education was woefully neglected. An educated person was a rarity. Then children attended the old field school only and notwithstanding the handicap the boys showed a remarkable intellectual vigor, and made their mark. John married young and engaged in the mercantile business at what was then called the McHanns cross roads, midway between Marion and Rutherfordton. Jim Morris has a document drawn by him at the time. The contract between himself and his partner, hardly legible. His wife died. He studied law and soon won an enviable reputation at the bar. George did also. There was not facilities for transmitting news then as now, court weeks were of all absorbing interest and attracted large crowds. When a child I heard much talk about the sensational murder trial in Rutherfordton in which Uncle John prosecuted and George defended the accused and invoked the unwritten law with impassioned eloquence, brought tears to the eyes of the jury and acquitted his man and was showered with congratulations. After a strenuous campaign for the state senate he took typhoid and died.
"He was my mother's favorite brother, she thought he was more talented than her other brothers and had visioned air castles ahead of him. John courted a lady that rejected him somewhat disdainfully. After he had attained success at the bar she made overtures and tried to win him back, and strange as it seems although sixty-five years have passed since then and a multiplicity of matters having engrossed my attention, a sentence in a.

Biography of George William Eaves, by Betty Douthit

Limestone County was home for George William "Will" Eaves who farmed, hunted, and fished in the northeast section of the county where he was born July 14, 1873. His parents, William Calvin Eaves (1848-1920) and Sarah Catherine Moore (1854-1918) had seven children: William followed by: Johnie, Hessie, Mattie, Flossie, Thomas and Florence.

William was a tall, slim, lanky man who loved the out-of-doors, was a skilled marksman, and photos usually show him with his big rifle. He married Rebecca "Becky" Jane Thornton, born 3-12-1875, and they had four children: Joel Calvin born 1895 and died after four months; Bessie Ira born 3-3-1897, married Howard Douthit, lived in Limestone County all their lives and had eight children: Mildred, Merle, Willard, Marcella, Jean, Nathalie, Joe and Jane.
