He was buried on 12 September 1932 in Lovington, Lea Co., NM. Family Records of Nick Pavlakovich, Jr. Albuquerque, NM

The Paschal S. Eaves Family

Paschal S. Eaves was born August 27, 1850 in South Carolina and moved to Hill County, Texas, near Hillsboro when just a young man. Having had 3 brothers
killed in the Civil War, he was one of thousands of Southerners who came west to find new opportunity after the war ended. He married Mary Susan Brown in 1874
and the couple had their first child, John Simeon Eaves, in 1875. The Eaves family grew with the birth of three more sons, Hamp, Earnest, and Henry, and one daughter, Mary. The family moved in 1890 to Stonewall County. Mr. Eaves was a farmer while he lived in Texas.

Oddly enough it was the oldest son, J. S. (Sim) Eaves, who pioneered first in the Territory of New Mexico. He moved west, about 1898, to the Monument area in the
capacity of foreman for the vast sheep herds of A. J. Crawford of Carlsbad. At sometime after 1898 and before 1909, his three brothers joined him to make their
homes in the future Lea County.

The first day of October 1909, P. S. (later known as Dad) his wife and daughter Mary, started the long trip from Dorras, Stonewall County, to Lovington, to join
the Eaves boys and to make their new home. The trip was made in two covered wagons; Mrs. Eaves in one wagon and Dad in the lead wagon, which was drawn
by four horses. They were almost two weeks making the trip because the weather was cool and there were sandstorms to slow them down. Late one afternoon they
saw dust rising in the distance - it was a car! The horses had never seen a car, and the Eaves had seen very few. The horses became entangled in their harness
and almost turned the wagon over. Dad Eaves was furious, and if he had been a man who used profane language, he would have used it that day. The driver of
the car finally got out of the road and the wagons were able to continue on their way.

They arrived in Lovington late one Saturday evening and stopped at the Oscar Thompson home (which was located where the Lovington Public Library now stands) to inquire where Sim Eaves lived. They were directed to his home (the location now being 212 East Avenue A) where they found a large gathering of adults and children.
The grown ups were inside playing one of the first Victor phonographs, and the youngsters were outside playing games under the supervision of their granddaughter,
Bess Eaves.

After a few days rest, Mr. and Mrs. Eaves moved to Sim and Babe Eaves ranch, 20 miles west of Lovington, and Mary stayed in Lovington to attend school. After a year
they moved back to Lovington and built a house at 215 East Avenue B. Dad Eaves established a Mercantile store known as "P. S. Eaves and Company Mercantile" on the west side of the square, which he operated for several years.

Because of the growing need for the formation of a new county in southeastern New Mexico, Mr. Eaves decided to enter politics. Being a Democrat, he had little relish
for the idea of running for public office and going to Santa Fe where the politicians were Republicans and a good portion of the people spoke a foreign language. But he had the support of R. F. Love, representative at that time, and the promise of his eldest son, Sim, to exert his influence with the Republicans, and since he was fluent
in New Mexico's other language, he also offered to get the message over with Spanish-speaking opponents in the Pecos Valley and the state capitol. November 7, 1916, Pascal Eaves won the election, and became a member of the Republican dominated House of Representatives. Through his efforts, the fight for a new county to be cut off from parts of Eddy and Chaves counties was successful. He had been promised the part of County Clerk of the New County. It became a reality, but due to circumstances, this was not to be. In the 1916 election, a democrat was elected Governor of the state, but because of his death before he could sign the Lea County division bill, and an opportunity to appoint the county's first slate of officers, it became the duty of Republican Lieutenant Governor W. E. Lindsey to sign the bill and make the appointments. Most went to Republicans. This was a great disappointment to Eaves. Ironically, among those first county officials was Sim Eaves, a member of the board of county commissions, and the board's first chairman. Mr. Eaves did not abandon participation in public life as a result of the affront. He later became a member of the county
board of education and in 1926, was elected Lea County probate judge, a post he held until 1931. He was elected again in 1931 but died before this term expired.

Dad Eaves was a member of the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Eaves was a very active member of the First Methodist Church. Dad Eaves died September 10, 1932,
his wife Mary Susan, died August 23, 1932. Both are buried in the Lovington Cemetery.
