Horse Racing Systems – The Advantages and Disadvantage of Laying Horses!

As you are most likely aware the invention of the betting exchanges around a decade ago swept in a new era of betting, especially when it came to horse races. Betting on a race became so much easier as all you needed to do was get online and get betting. But that wasn’t the only thing the exchanges brought to the gambling world, they also brought the ability to lay or as some call it the ability to be the bookmaker.

Also for those of us currently residing in the UK it meant that we had to get our heads around decimal odds. However being able to lay horses was the real big thing to come from the exchanges. It meant that we, the betting public, could now make a decision as to whether a horse will win or not and if we did not think it would win instead of backing another horse as we would normally do we could lay it off. This was a totally radical new way of betting and one that has only gotten more and more popular since it’s invention.

The best thing people say about laying horses is that it is much easier to select a loser than it is to select a winner. That is to say if there were a 10 horse race it would be much easier for you to pick a horse that will not win the race than for you to pick a horse that will win the race. As we can see here you will undoubtedly have a much higher strike rate than ever before and you have the chance to start making the big profits like the bookmakers have been doing all along.

The drawback with laying horses to lose is that you have to put up with the liability involved if the horse does win. Take for example you lay a horse at 5.5 on the exchange to make a profit of £100 and it wins you will have to pay out £450 to the person who took you up on the bet. It is probably important to point out now is the reason why betfair is so popular is because it boasts higher odds than most traditional bookmakers.

On betfair the prices are said to be a standard 20% higher than at a traditional bookmaker. This means that you are still not in the same boat as the bookmakers as they are laying things off at considerably lower odds than you are. All of this is still not including the commission charged by betfair also!

Even after all of the disadvantages I have just mentioned I still love lay betting and I will tell you why; you do not have to do it for every race! Sure the bookmaker is compelled to offer odds for every horse on every race but you don’t have to, you can pick and choose and it is this reason and this reason alone why there is money to be made in laying horses

6 The Native Americans of Palm Springs

Palm Springs is a desert paradise with sparkling waters, tree-lined canyons and bubbling hot springs. This rich, desert oasis has been the site of civilization for thousands of years beginning with the native inhabitants of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. For centuries, this band of Native Americans lived off of the bounty to be had in this unique desert, ecosystem.

The region was ideal for habitation, and the Agua Caliente took advantage of the resources in the area and survived by living off of the land. They used multitudes of desert plants for food, clothes, medicine and hunted game such as deer, bighorn sheep, rabbits and other small animals. They also used an elaborate irrigation system to aid in the production of crops that were brought by the Spanish including corn, squash, beans and melons.

Sadly, in 1862 a small pox epidemic brought about by the influx of whites into the area almost completely wiped out the Agua Caliente altogether. In 1925, only 50 Agua Caliente remained. Today, there are 240. They still hold the majority of the land in the Palm Springs area and run successful casinos and other tourist attractions in the area.

7 How Palm Springs was named

The first non-Native American to settle in the Palm Springs area was Judge John Guthrie McCallum. Arriving in Palm Springs in 1884 from San Francisco with family in tow, McCallum worked alongside the Native Americans to build a 19 mile stone-lined ditch from the Whitewater River Springs to irrigate the dryer parts of the area.

Continuing throughout the 19th century, numerous explorers, colonizers and soldiers came through the desert and remarked on the lush oasis to be found in the Coachella Valley, but no formal name had been given to the site. Often referred to as Palm Springs, Agua Caliente or Palm Valley, it wasn’t until 1890 when Harry McCallum wrote his address as Palm Springs that the region came to be known under those terms.

Living in the Philippines – Most Popular Beach Resort Retirement Areas of Foreigners

When it comes to retirement locations in the Philippines, one has many options – major urban cities, larger rural cities, beach resorts, mountain retreats. Each has its own unique and attractive features. The major advantage of retirement in a beach resort is are (i) exciting beach activities, (ii) ongoing “vacation” atmosphere, (iii) great entertainment and night life, (iv) continuous influx of foreign travelers, (v) numerous upscale hotels and related resort facilities, (vi) great airport accessibility, and (vi) yet small populations. In this category of retirement spots, the most popular are (i) Boracay Island, (ii) Mactan Island, (iii) Panglao Island, (iv) Subic Bay, (v) and Puerto Galera.

BORACAY ISLAND

This is the most famous of all the beach resort areas in the Philippines. There are many 5 star resorts on this island and numerous bars and restaurants owned by foreigners. The sand is some of the best in the whole world, and the night life is supreme. However, it is crowded and overdeveloped like Waikiki and Miami Beach. It has a small permanent population of around 15,000 but a large daily population of tourists from around the world. It attracts travelers of all sorts – international sophisticates, Manila urbanites getting away, serious water enthusiasts, backpackers, and late night party animals. The downside of Boracay is that housing costs tend to run on the high side, more like the costs of housing in Manila. However, for a retiree looking for beach resort action, Boracay Island is the place to be.

MACTAN ISLAND

This island is just adjacent to Cebu City, across a bridge, and in fact where the Cebu international and domestic airports are located. Like Boracay, Mactan too has sandy beaches, but not near the quality of those at Boracay. It also is packed with upscale 5 star hotels and resorts. Yet, whereas Boracay is more remote, accessibility is excellent and Mactan Island due to its proximity to Cebu. Additionally, there is a casino on Mactan Island for those who enjoy the addition of gambling to their retirement lifestyle.

Lliving on Mactan Island provides that resort atmosphere, due to all the resort hotels, yet it is close to great medical facilities and upscale shopping malls across the bridge in Cebu City. Housing costs are lower on Mactan than on Boracay.

PANGLAO ISLAND

This island is across a short bridge from the much larger island of Bohol, which is approximately a 1/12 hour fast-boat ferry ride from Cebu City, or a short airport ride from the Cebu domestic airport. Panglao Island has a population of around 60,000 and is generally associated with Alona Beach, a strip of resorts and dive centres on the southern side of the island. Diving is what draws tourists and retirees to Panglao Island.

There are many resorts and the cost of living is substantially less than on Mactan Island. On the down side of course is that the island is more remote and requires a boat or air trip to get to the medical and shopping facilities of Cebu City.

SUBIC BAY

This area has rapidly become a favorite retirement area, especially for retired US military personnel and for Koreans. Until 1992, Subic Bay was the base for the huge 7th Fleet of the US Navy. These days it is in the process of being remolded into a tax free foreign trade zone and a modern tourist destination. A modern new superhighway was completed in 2008 which has cut the travel time from Manila by an hour. This provides great access to all that Manila has to offer, yet permits retirement in a smaller resort oriented community with all that has to offer. The population is now in excess of 200,000. The presence of Koreans is largely due to the construction in 2006 in Subic Bay of a large Korean shipbuilding plant. Housing costs have risen considerably in 2008 and 2009, yet they are significantly below Manila costs. There are lots of retired military people living in this location.

PUERTO GALERA

Puerto Galera, located just a few hours drive south of Manila, has a small population of around 30,000, and is one of the top tourist destinations in the Philippines. Divers especially visit there in droves. Diving is king at Puerto Galera, with drinking close second. Beaches are numerous, but they lack the real resort style white-sand. The area is known for its great diving and its great night life. Watering holes, music and all kinds of nightlife are everywhere in Puerto Galera. Cost of living and housing is on the low end in Puerto Galera, as compared to the other beach resort retirement areas.

Fabulous! Carnival in Venice

In about 1985, I saw a photo of Venice during Carnival (Carnevale), which included the masked and costumed revelers, it has been on my “Top 10” visit list ever since.

What is not to like about this event:

  • The beautiful city of Venice
  • A really big 10 day party through the streets
  • Fantastic costumes
  • Italian food

Carnival (Carnevale) is the annual event in Venice for the ten days leading up to Lent, the last night is Shrove Tuesday on which there are several big balls. Of course this is not just a Venetian tradition; think Mardi Gras in Rio or Trinidad during the same time of year, but my interest in fancy masked balls and beautiful costumes is much greater than watching dancers in dental floss bikinis. The origin of the word carnevale is Latin (carnem levare or carnelevarium) and suggests a “farewell to meat”, which was traditionally given up in the weeks of self-denial, during the period of Lent.

The history of the masks and the masquerade dates back to Roman times, there are records of the festival as far back as 1162. The Romans celebrated the early part of the year with a fertility festival where masks were used by all levels of society including slaves. The Carnevale di Venezia enjoyed a long period of infamy and notoriety through the 1600s, up until the time of Napoleon’s conquer in 1797. At the peak of this event, the party started on December 26th and ended sometime in the spring. This period of gambling and partying coincided with the loss of prominence and wealth in the region, as the power centers of Holland and Britain expanded their trading reaches. The celebration continued to decline and was actually banned in 1930 by Mussolini. A group of Venetians, and Venice lovers restarted the tradition in 1979.

Today the Carnevale is limited to the ten-day period before Lent and it is an enormous tourist draw. The city is really crowded, hotels are expensive, restaurants full and the streets are at times simply bottlenecked. There are websites and tour groups fully dedicated to the event. The range of party events caters to the rich and sophisticated (balls and music), to the families with kids (chocolate and puppets) and to the college crowd (pub crawls).

You can choose to participate in the carnival celebrations in several ways depending on your tastes, energy level and budget. You can simply walk around the streets or sit in a cafe and watch the incredible costumed characters that are wondering the streets. Spend some time in Piazzo San Marco, there are all sorts of special performances throughout the day and night. Choose to get your face painted and have some fun. Or you can buy tickets to any number events, that range from very affordable to very expensive.

We booked two nights in a great hotel right near Piazza San Marco. Arrival in Venice was actually easier than anticipated; there is lots of signage, big car parks and a central arrival point for the aqua-transit system. The vaporetti (water buses) are very efficient, there are multiple routes and destinations available, at a very minimum every visitor will end up on the #1 or #2 at some point, running in the Grande Canal and Canale delle Giudecca (respectively). Buy a multi-day unlimited ticket; you will end up using the system.

Venice at any time of the year is beautiful; there are endless museums, galleries and historical buildings to engage all types of interests. Two things that I would highly recommend;

  1. A visit to the island of Murano where the glass factories are located. You can take the “scenic” boat tour that we did in error and really see all the islands or go direct. In either case, Murano is filled with glass and restaurants and is a nice break from the crowds in Venice.
  2. The Secret Itineraries Tour of the Doge’s Palace. This tour as something beyond the normal tour and it is really fun!

Alliance Cooking Guide – Fishing For Raw Redgill

This Alliance Cooking Guide will look at Fishing for Raw Redgill to level your cooking skill past the difficult 225-300 ranges. Most people find that it takes them several hours to farm the necessary materials to reach 300 following other guides, but my Alliance Cooking Guide will get you there in about 1 hour Fishing for Raw Redgill, not including travel time to the fishing locations and to purchase the recipe.

In order to put into effect my Alliance Cooking Guide and begin fishing, you must have close to 400 fishing skill, or know someone with the proper fishing skill level willing to fish for you. However, with a minimum 300 fishing skill level and a few Aquadynamic Fish Attractors, you should have no trouble Fishing for Raw Redgill.

Now this is where I must confess that Fishing for Raw Redgill alone will not level your cooking skill to 300. My Alliance Cooking Guide requires 2 other types of fish – Raw Whitescale Salmon and Raw Sunscale Salmon that are all caught from the same pond.

Before you begin fishing, you should pick up the recipes. Hopefully, you already have the Flight Paths to all these locations or you are going to do a lot of riding.

Fly to Booty Bay. Find cook Kelsey Yance and buy Recipe: Filet of Redgill. Take boat to Rachet. Fly to Gadgetzan. Ride East to Steamwheedle Port and buy Recipe: Poached Sunscale Salmon from Gikkix. Ride back to Gadgetzan and fly to Feathermoon Stronghold in Feralas. Buy Recipe: Baked Salmon from Vivianna.

I would recommend buying extra recipes to sell on the Auction House as they can fetch up to 5-10 times more than what you bought them for depending on your server.

Alliance Cooking Guide Travel Tip: If your Hearth Stone is set to Dalaran, you could hearth there after Booty Bay and take the portal to Tanaris.

Once you’ve collected all of the recipes, fly to Everlook in Winterspring. Ride West to the Frostfire Hot Springs just before the entrance to Timbermaw Hold.

For our Alliance Cooking Guide we are fishing for Raw Redgill (5%), Raw Sunscale Salmon (35%) and Raw Whitescale Salmon (40%). All three can be caught here, but it seems the only time you can catch Raw Sunscale Salmon is between 12:00-18:00 server-time. If you are having trouble catching enough Raw Redgill for the Alliance Cooking Guide, try the waters on the other side of Timbermall Hold in Felwood. The catch rate there is about 40%.

Amounts needed:

· Raw Redgill x 25

· Raw Sunscale Salmon x 25

· Raw Whitescale Salmon x 25.

Mobsters, Gangs, Criminals and Crooks – William J Sharkey

He was a crook, a pickpocket, a Tammany Hall politician, and finally, a murderer. Yet William J. Sharkey was best known for his daring escape from death row, in New York City’s Tombs Prison.

Sharkey was born in New York City in 1845, to well-to-do family, which resided in the Ninth Ward in Manhattan. Despite the affluence of his family, Sharkey gravitated over to the dark side. He began hanging out with pickpockets, gamblers, and crooks, and soon he became a very capable pickpocket himself, and a gambler of some renown. One sad day, Sharkey was arrested for pickpocketing, and he had his picture taken by the municipal photographer, giving himself a definitive presence in the criminal record section, of New York City Police Department.

Sharkey soon elevated himself in the criminal ladder, dealing in stolen bonds. With the money from his endeavors piling in, Sharkey formed his own gang called “Sharkey’s Guards,” which had their headquarters at the corner of Wooster and Houston Streets. It was there that Sharkey insinuated himself into the local political scene, and soon he was the darling of the crooks who ran Tammany Hall. Sharkey dressed himself in the finest clothes, wearing sparkling diamonds on his fingers, and around his neck. Soon, Tammany Hall put Sharkey up for election, for Assistant Alderman. Even though Tammany Hall’s had influence, and muscle, working in their favor at the polls, Sharkey somehow lost the election. Disappointed with his political failure, Sharkey decided to go back to his first loves – stealing and gambling.

With the money he made from various illegal endeavors, Sharkey traveled to Buffalo, New York, and started a faro game. However, Sharkey was so unlucky, he managed to lose $4000 in just five days. Downtrodden, Sharkey returned to New York City, and hooked up with his old friend Robert Dunn, real name Bob Isaacs. Dunn was an employee of the City’s Comptroller’s Office, but he also was a faro dealer, in a Fulton Street gambling house. Figuring Dunn was a more capable faro expert then he, Sharkey gave Dunn $600, and told him to go to Buffalo, and try his hand at faro. Dunn agreed that if he was successful in Buffalo, he promised to repay Sharkey the $600, plus half his winnings. As luck would have it, Dunn was just as unlucky in Buffalo as Sharkey was, and he lost his entire stake. Dunn returned to New York City, and told Sharkey the bad news.

On September 1, 1872, Dunn and Sharkey attended the funeral of James Riley, a prominent member of the Michael Norton Association, a political arm of Tammany Hall. After the funeral, Sharkey and Dunn traveled separately to a saloon owned by Charles Harvey, called “The Place,” located at 288 Hudson Street. By the time Sharkey had arrived, Dunn had already imbibed a few rye whiskeys at the bar. Sharkey ordered a rye himself, and after he knocked it down in one gulp, Sharkey demanded his $600 back from Dunn. Dunn told Sharkey he was tapped out himself, and couldn’t repay the money. Sharkey immediately drew a single-shot Derringer pistol, and pointed it at Dunn’s chest.

Dunn screamed, “Don’t shoot, Billy! I’ll pay you as soon as I can!”

Sharkey would have none of that. He bellowed back, “You better pay me now!”

Before Dunn could reply, Sharkey fired the Derringer point-blank at Dunn. The bullet pierced Dunn’s heart, killing him instantly. Sharkey fled the scene of the crime, but he was captured a few hours later, in a boarding house on Washington Street, near Perry Street.

Sharkey was tried, convicted, and sentenced to be hanged at the Tombs Prison, on August 15, 1873. However, Sharkey’s connections at Tammany Hall pushed back his execution date to early December.

While Sharkey was imprisoned, he was visited daily by the most beautiful Maggie Jourdan, herself a very successful pickpocket. Miss Jourdan arrived early every morning, and always stood until visiting hours were over. Miss Jourdan was a great friend of Mrs. Wesley Allen, the wife of a burglar, whose brother John Allen owned a bawdy dance hall on Water Street. John Allen was known as “The Wickedest Man in New York City.”

While most prisoners at the Tombs lived in perpetual squalor, Sharkey lived quite nicely on the second tier of the prison, in an area called “Murderer’s Row.” With the money Jourdan earned stealing, and also by her hocking her jewelry, including her gold watch, Sharkey was able to decorate his jail cell number 40 (which was never locked), with the finest furniture. Jordan bought Sharkey a walnut table, a Kidderminster carpet, a canary in a cage, and a book-and-magazine rack, which was suspended from the ceiling by silken cords. Jourdan also supplied Sharkey with a soft mattress for his bed, a comfortable chair for his lounging, draperies for his cell door, an elegant dressing gown made of velvet and cherry-colored silk, and velvet slippers.

Jourdan often told Sharkey during her visits, that if he died, she no longer wanted to live. “Willie, I could never let you suffer,” she tearfully told him.

On November 19, 1873, at exactly 10 AM, Jourdan arrived at the Franklin Street entrance to the Tombs. The guard on duty gave her the usual pass given to all visitors. The bottom part of her body was noticeably bulky, but the prison guards thought she had just put on additional petticoats, to protect herself the from the cold November air. Jourdan immediately went to Sharkey’s cell, and she spoke to him for several hours. The prison guards were so accustomed to her being there, they hardly paid any attention to what she did, and what she said to Sharkey.

Mrs. Wesley Allen arrived at the prison at 12:30 PM. She stopped at Sharkey’s cell on the second tier, and spoke to both Jourdan and Sharkey. Then Mrs. Allen went upstairs to the third tier, to visit a prisoner named Flood. At 1 PM, Jourdan exited the prison, which was quite unusual, since she always stood until the end of the day.

A half an hour later, a strange-looking woman, with especially broad shoulders, walked down the second-tier corridor, through two lower gates, and out of the prison. As this dubious lady exited the prison, she handed her pass to the guard minding the exit. This woman wore a heavy black woolen dress, a black coat, an Alpine bonnet, and a thick green veil, which covered her entire face. Patrolmen Dolan was walking down Franklin Street, when he saw this woman nimbly jump onto a passing streetcar, even though she was wearing high French heels.

At 2:05 PM, Mrs. Wesley Allen tried to exit the prison. As she passed the guard standing at the exit, the guard asked her for her visitor’s pass. Mrs. Allen nervously fumbled in her dress pockets for several seconds, before she said, “I put it in my pocket, but I must have lost it.”

The guard, realizing something was up, immediately summoned Warden Johnson. Mrs. Allen was detained, while Warden Johnson ordered all cells in the prison to be immediately searched. During this search, they were dismayed to find out that Sharkey’s cell was empty. His elegant clothes were scattered about his cell, and right above his washbasin, were the remnants of his flowing mustache, which had obviously just been shaved off.

Mrs. Allen was immediately arrested, but since there was no concrete evidence to incriminate her, the police reluctantly released her. Jourdan was arrested that night at her mother’s home at 167 9th Ave. When the detectives told her she was under arrest, Jourdan replied, “I am the happiest little woman in the world.”

Jourdan was tried in General Sessions Court, and was defended by the infamous attorney Big Bill Howe. Howe was so efficient in Jourdan’s defense, the jury acquitted her on all charges.

It was later determined, that despite the fact the police had searched all the piers in the city looking for Sharkey, Sharkey had escaped on the schooner Frank Atwood, and made his way to Haiti. Not liking that country too much, Sharkey boarded another boat, and travel to Cuba, where he settled.

Two years after Sharkey had made his escape from the Tombs Prison, Maggie Jourdan joined Sharkey in Cuba. Yet for some unknown reason (probably because Sharkey was an incorrigible creature), Sharkey badly mistreated Jourdan, the very woman responsible for Sharkey avoiding the gallows in New York City. Sharkey abused Jourdan so much, the captain of the ship who had taken Jourdan to Cuba, hustled her back on board, and took her back to New York City.

Soon afterwards, Jourdan found her true love, whom she married. They presumably lived happily ever after.

As far as it can be determined, William J. Sharkey never returned to New York City.

Carvel and Clinker Built Boats

Boats may be built out of boards or planks in two different styles. If the boards are laid edge to edge, the boat is carvel-built. If the boards overlap, the boat is clinker-built. Among the larger kinds of carvel-built boats are launches, pinnaces and cutters. Many of these are as much as 36 feet long and 8 to 10 feet wide. Launches are open, or undecked, boats. They are used by ships to carry supplies and sailors to and from the shore, and large launches are sometimes used as pleasure boats on lakes and rivers.

A pinnace is a light sailboat. It was used in the past as a tender, or supply boat, for larger ships. A cutter is a broad boat with a square stern or rear end. It is driven by oars, motor, or sails. Cutters used to be carried by ships, to move supplies and persons in harbors. Today a cutter is either a large, heavy rowboat carried on big steamships and driven by ten oars, or one of the large, fast, steel boats used by the United States Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard cutter is a light warship of some 2,000 tons, powered by diesel engines and equipped with a small cannon. Among the best known clinker-built small boats are the popular dinghy, gig, and whaleboat. A dinghy is a small rowboat about 6 to 10 feet long, propelled by oars, and used either as a pleasure craft or as a service boat for larger sail boars and motorboats. Big motorboats may tow their dinghies behind them or have them fastened down on the deck. A dinghy is used to ferry people between the larger boat and the dock
